Since its early days in the industry, Nintendo has been well-known partly for its various memorable co-op video games. Even in an increasingly online medium, Nintendo's co-op reputation stands well into the Nintendo Switch console generation.

The gaming console/handheld hybrid is an excellent form factor for co-op gameplay, both online or locally, across first- and third-party titles. The lucrative Super Mario franchise is a wellspring of multiplayer games thanks to the subgenres it experiments with. Meanwhile, third-party publishers like Capcom produced other contemporary hits with Monster Hunter Rise. Overall, the Nintendo Switch boasts a healthy catalog of co-op-friendly games of various genres.
Updated November 27, 2024, by Robbie Robinson: The Switch continues to be one of the best consoles for classic feeling co-op games. There are many games on the Switch library, many of which aren't even available on other platforms. As such, this list has been updated to include more co-op games that will tide people over during the holiday season.
30 Super Mario Party Jamboree Gives Players New Ways to Screw Each Other Over
It's Rare For a Mario Party Game To End With Appropriate Sportsmanship

Yet another Mario Party has graced the loving owners of the Nintendo Switch. Super Mario Party Jamboree has everything anyone could want from a Mario Party game. There are silly minigames, stars to be stolen, and shameful remarks to make about competitors. In addition, Mario Party Jamboree has made some new tweaks to the game.

Mario Party is no walk in the Rainbow Castle. Get ready to test friendships and lose stars while somehow enjoying every moment of it.
A big addition in Mario Party Jamboree is that players can pick up companions of sorts, like NPCs that will travel with them on the board. That means players can buy two items at the shop, which is pretty overpowered. The minigames are fantastic and the fighting spirit is properly stoked for all players. Mario Party is the best franchise of co-op games on the Switch, and with a new one out, gamers should make sure to give it a try.

29 Just Dance Has Always Been One of the Best Games For Family Fun
Just Dance Is Also an Awesome Game For Getting a Workout
Just Dance has to be considered one of the best franchises ever when it comes to party games. Not only can people actually learn real dances from it, but it's a good way to get some physical activity while experiencing the joys of playing a video game. Of course, it can be played solo, but having healthy dance-offs with friends or family is always fun. The Nintendo Switch has multiple Just Dance games on the platform, but Just Dance 2025 became available on October 15.

There's nothing groundbreaking about the 2025 edition, but it's Just Dance. It doesn't need to change — it's perfect as is. Now, Just Dance 2025 has added about 40 new songs, featuring the likes of Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter. The motion controls of the Switch work amazing with Just Dance, and it's an easy game to get into. Hard to master? Yes, but it's still exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.
Just Dance 2025 Edition
Just Dance 2025 Edition is a dance rhythm game developed and published by Ubisoft. It is the sixteenth installment in the series, and the third annual song pack after its predecessors Just Dance 2023 Edition and 2024 Edition.
28 Heave Ho Is the Best Game For a Double Date
Or, It's Just a Great Game to Let Players' Competitive Sides Show
✕ Remove Ads
The Switch has no shortage of silly, yet addictive games. Heave Ho feels exactly like what the ultimate co-op Switch game should be. Four players will dive into a game with long-armed, big-handed fellows that have two purposes - gripping and swinging. The general idea is simple, as players need to make it to the goal. However, the levels consist of players dangling from increasingly ridiculous platforms with jumps that require focus and heavy teamwork.
Heave Ho is also an excellent game for a double date night. There are team-based modes that pit two players against two players. Whichever team makes it to the goal first wins. It's an awesome game for anyone looking to be playfully competitive with the Switch, but not wanting to play a Mario game. It's quite a difficult game, as it requires tons of strategy, but it's entertaining enough to not be angering.

27 Ultimate Chicken Horse Lets Players Craft Their Own Levels
It's Up to the Players How Difficult They Want to Make Their Maps
Ultimate Chicken Horse is a unique game on the Switch that offers a new way of platforming. Out of a handful of levels, players will build the levels together as they play. First, players will pick from a roster of adorable little animals, and dive into a very straightforward level. After the level is beaten in Ultimate Chicken Horse, players choose from obstacles that they can place on that same level. It can be as crazy or as peaceful as players would like.
Players can, of course, die, but there's no blood or gore. That makes Ultimate Chicken Horse a good family-friendly game that will entertain children and likely frustrate parents or older siblings. For the more competitive people out there, diving in with four players can be total mayhem. No rules state that anyone must work together.

Cartoonish Violence and Crass Humor Make This Game Enjoyable
Castle Crashers is far from being a new game, but it's perfect for the Switch. Castle Crashers sees a kingdom ravaged, and its princesses kidnapped during a dance-filled party. It's up to the powerful knights of the realm to slay their foes and save the princesses. There are tons of levels, new weapons to unlock, magic powers, and zany bosses that will give players a run for their money. Oh, and also players get to smooch the princesses as each one is saved.

Castle Crashers is built for co-op from top to bottom. It can host up to four players, and each player must pick a different character. On the bright side, there are over 20 characters, with most of them being unlockable throughout the game. Players will save the four princesses one by one. After the boss is defeated, players must fight each other to see who will get to steal the lips of the pretty princess. It's a fun co-op game, and there is an eagerly awaited DLC set to release soon.

25 Nobody Saves the World Is Boundless Chaotic Fun
It's a Difficult Co-Op Game, But It's Endlessly Addicting and Compelling
✕ Remove Ads
Nobody Saves the World has a rare charm to it that isn't often found in games. The original character that players wake up as is a block-headed ghostly white fellow who seems just as confused at the state of the world as the players. The humor and visuals are reminiscent of Castle Crashers, though this game is more of an open world than separate levels.

24 Unravel 2 Is a Beautiful Platformer That Has Players Work Together
It's an Amazing, Atmospheric Co-Op Game That Is a Must-Have Game For Switch Owners
Unravel was released in 2016 and gave players an inventive platformer while also delivering an incredible story. While the first game was only single-player, the sequel introduced local co-op. In Unravel 2, players will take on the role of little Yarny and his friend. This side-scroller is perfect for any pair that wants to work together in such an immersive world.

The earlier levels of Unravel 2 aren't difficult, but the challenge does begin to ramp up. It's not an impossible game, but players who are familiar with platformers will likely have a much easier time getting into the groove, as opposed to someone who has never tried a platformer out. This game is certainly worth a buy for any pair that is looking for reasonable obstacles while discovering the beauty of friendship.

23 Gang Beasts Is an Unserious Beat-Em-Up
It's the Best Time to Download This Game Since It Just Received a Much-Needed Update
PVP fighting games will always be popular. While most people are inclined to default to the Super Smash series, there are many other awesome fighting games, like Gang Beasts. In this game, players have the fun and freedom to design their jelly-like characters and dress them up in various costumes. The gameplay for this game revolves around two things: grabbing and throwing a punch. The game's exaggerated physics are similar to those found in games like Human Fall Flat.
✕ Remove Ads
One of Gang Beasts' greatest joys lies within the maps, which are designed to be hazardous at best and lethal at their worst. Some maps will have players jumping across moving semi-trucks. Some have players perilously climbing up billboards that are falling apart. The mechanics can feel wonky and a little difficult to master, but that's all part of the fun. Nothing trumps the victorious feeling of knocking another player out and tossing them off the side of a roof.

22 Untitled Goose Game Lets Players Antagonize Humans as a Pair of Geese
The Path of Villany Begins With One (Or Two) White Geese
✕ Remove Ads
Some of the most entertaining games are created by endless tomfoolery, and Untitled Goose Game is ripe with shenanigans. It's exactly what makes it so endearing, as players get to take control of a pair of white geese with nothing better to do than cause mayhem in town. It sounds fairly realistic considering how real geese can behave.
Together, players in Untitled Goose Game will get to solve small puzzles, steal and commit heinous goose crimes — or at least make it frustrating to be the human on the other end. This game isn't particularly hard, but it can be easy to accidentally make a mistake with timing. This is the perfect casual game for any pair of friends who want to laugh and freely honk at anything they desire.

Untitled Goose Game
There are plenty of games that influence meme formats, but how many memes become games themselves? That is the story of Untitled Goose Game, a quirky and hilarious “stealth” game based on an internal meme circulated at House House, the developers of the game.
In Untitled Goose Game, players take control of a goose with one sole purpose: cause as much trouble for as many people in an unnamed English village. There isn’t much in terms of plot, big surprise. Rather, the goose has a number of vague objects, all of which involve stealing items or breaking things around town.
The player will have to sneak around as well as use their mighty goose abilities to honk, flap, and run its way through the village, avoiding the villagers while it wreaks havoc.
The game is surprisingly idyllic thanks to its lovely minimal design and peaceful music. The game was very well received when it came out and non-surprisingly became a meme in and of itself. It’s the ultimate culmination of internet culture in many ways, and it is also just a lot of great fun. If you’re hoping to cause some havoc without stressing yourself out, Untitled Goose Game is the indie game for you.

21 Pikmin 4 Makes Players Strategically Split Up Their Colorful Pikmin
No Game Is As Peaceful, Yet Stressful as a Pikmin Game
Pikmin has been a franchise of enjoyable co-op games for years, yet it has never abandoned the endearing traits that have made these games so memorable. Pikmin 4 is easily one of the greatest games in the entire series. On top of it being visually beautiful, it also adds a nifty feature that allows players to determine the difficulty of their game.
Pikmin certainly involves a lot of strategy and time management. Players will get to create their characters in this development, which is a lot of fun, even though old-time fans still love Olimar and Louie. The joys of Pikmin are rooted in the fantastical feeling of being as small as a bug in an abandoned world, gathering food and items for the colony, and gathering an army of adorable creatures. Luckily for new players to this franchise, getting into Pikmin with this installment doesn't take anything from the experience.

19 Arms Is an Underrated Co-Op Fighter
Sadly, the Game Fell Flat on Release Due to the General Consensus of American Players
✕ Remove Ads
The game may not have made a big splash in mainstream gaming spaces, but Arms is a surprisingly engaging experience in local multiplayer. Funnily enough, the reason it didn't make a huge splash was because US players, and those not based in Japan, have rather poor opinions about clowns - and this game has actual clown-type characters. Arms has players choose from multiple characters with cartoonishly long arms to fight with.
Arms doesn't revolutionize the fighting game genre but earns a warm critical reception for its unconventional gameplay. It won't satisfy players looking for a fighting game with deep mechanics, but its low barrier to entry is why it's great for local co-op. The over-the-top combat and colorful art direction make Arms a solid choice for a party-style tournament in social gatherings.

18 River City Girls Is a Colorful Retro Throwback
Yet Another Amazing Beat-Em'-Up Featured on the Nintendo Switch
The beat-'em-up genre is a classic that pays homage to the days of arcades being prominent in the gaming industry. And though it's not a major genre in today's landscape, titles like WayForward Technologies' River City Girls are a reminder that it's far from dead. While it plays as a standard beat-em'-up, River City Girls offers a light-hearted, goofy story that is sure to make players smile.
River City Girls puts players in the roles of high school students Misako and Kyoko as they navigate through levels filled with enemies to beat to rescue their kidnapped boyfriends. The game's vibrant art style, soundtrack, and witty humor are all a delight. However, its punchy combat excels when played in 2-player co-op. 17 Super Mario Maker 2 Encourages Fun Creativity
It's Easy to Pop Into Premade Levels and Tougher to Build Your Own
Though it may not be the first 2D Mario platformer longtime fans will think of, Super Mario Maker 2 is an inventive experience. It's a wonder, truly, that Nintendo hasn't run out of ideas for Mario games at this point. The game turns players into amateur video game devs for the iconic plumber's platforming adventures, creating and playing through levels.

Super Mario Maker 2 is an endlessly fun experience locally or online, rewarding those who like to get creative or sift through other players' imaginative creations. This applies to its co-op mode, letting players build levels to their liking, set traps for their friends, and everything in between. It's not the same Mario experience some might hope for, but it's an engaging time on its own merits. Though, be warned that not every Mario Maker 2 level is equipped for multiple players — so keep that in mind when scrolling through other creator's levels.

Super Mario Maker 2
Super Mario Maker 2 is a must own Switch game. When its predecessor released, the idea behind the game shocked players around the world. Super Mario Maker 2 brings the same level of excitement and improves on the original in every possible way. What makes this game great is the fact that it relies on an incredibly passionate community to function. This game allows players to build their own Super Mario levels.
Players are tasked with creating their own custom Mario levels. Individuals have all of the tools to succeed. Players can build levels using themes from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U and Super Mario 3D World. These are the five themes available to players. Depending on the theme, different level designs are available. This is a game that truly thrives due to multiplayer. The community creates levels. Once levels are created they are playable for other gamers online.
The creativity on display is beyond anyone’s wildest expectations. There are a wide variety of levels to dive into. In fact some would say there is a never-ending amount. Players can sink countless hours into this game and still always discover new levels. There are easy levels, tricky levels and expert levels.
There are a few game modes to discover. Players can enjoy local multiplayer as well as online multiplayer. Therefor the online experience has a ton of depth. Not only can you attempt to complete an infinite amount of courses, you can also race against three other players to see who completes the course first. The online competitive mode is ranked therefore you can only play against players of the same skill level. Unfortunately Super Mario Maker 2 is prone to excessive amounts of lag when competing against other players. Oftentimes this completely ruins the competitive mode.

14 Moving Out 2 Turns a Chore Into Manic Fun
Wonky Physics and a Silly Premise Make This One of the Best Co-Op Switch Games
The party game genre is a great way to turn seemingly mundane chores in the real world into breezy entertainment in gaming. New Horizons brings players to an island to make their homealongside its other Animal Crossing residents, participating in soothing activities. It's a game that can make chopping wood and even taking out a mortgage entertaining, and visiting other players' islands and homes makes it more satisfying. Players can visit each other's islands and take on the game's many activities together, and it's perfect for non-competitive local or online co-op.

11 Super Mario Bros. Wonder Is the Latest Hit 2D Platformer For the Iconic Franchise
The Power Ups In This Mario Game Make It Extremely Fun To Play

Though it may be surprising that the Nintendo Switch console generation went so long without a mainline 2D Mario platformer, Super Mario Bros. Wonder was worth the wait. As longtime fans would expect, the game revitalizes the classic formula of the series. Players control the titular plumber and his supporting cast as they try to stop Bowser's plan to conquer the new Flower Kingdom.
Though the game is nothing groundbreaking for those familiar with co-op mechanics in 2D Mario games, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a tasteful refresh of its strongest assets, from level design to power-ups. The game provides delightfully vibrant levels that are consistently engaging to traverse through for up to four players, and some exciting new power-up abilities to keep gameplay interesting. This includes turning into a massive elephant or being able to drill underground.
